Becoming one with God

We are busy with a series of what Jesus meant when He said the two must become one. We already discovered that the principle of making the two into one has many layers. In this article we will look at becoming one with God.

Gospel of Thomas, Saying 22
..., Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter [the kingdom]."

As we have seen in other articles in this series, this saying has many levels and applications - but can we really also apply this saying to becoming one with God?

John 14:23 (AMP)
Jesus answered, “If anyone [really] loves Me, he will keep My word (teaching); and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our dwelling place with him.
You can have God within you - be one with God. A requirement is to follow the teachings of Jesus. To follow the teachings of Jesus you must know the teachings of Jesus.

Gospel of Thomas, Saying 108:
Jesus said, "Whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me; I myself shall become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to him."
In becoming one with God (a process) hidden teachings/things will be revealed to us. Things that you cannot read in a blog or hear in a sermon. The words of Morpheus comes to mind - I cannot show you what it is, you have to see it for yourself (paraphrased).

One of the teachings that also had to do with becoming one with God, caused thousands of the followers of Jesus to leave Him - 'eating the flesh of Jesus'. The crowd that witnessed Jesus supernaturally feed them, stopped following Him because of this teaching.

John 6:53 (NRSV)
So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
You have to 'consume' Jesus - become one with Him - so that you have life in you.

Someone that does not believe in Jesus and does not 'eat the flesh of Jesus' also has live (is alive) - so the 'life' that Jesus is talking about is more than just living.

Gospel of Thomas, Saying 1:
And he said, "Whoever discovers the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death."
Becoming one with God is linked to life, and again in this saying, discovering the teachings of Jesus is linked to becoming one with God. In the saying above we can see that the 'life' has an eternal and spiritual aspect to it.

'Life' however also has a present - here and now aspect to it - just as we discovered in the previous article in this series - becoming a child.

John 10:10 (AMP)
The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].
Jesus came to give us 'life' - in abundance. The original word for abundance in the verse above 'perissos' meaning superabundant in quantity and superior in quality.

Becoming one with Jesus is (also) about having a longer and better quality life.

There are more verses where it is clear that Jesus came to give 'life' that is not just spiritual or linked to 'a life in heaven one day; - but has to do with life here on earth.

John 1:1-5(NIV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.
Through Jesus everything was created. The 'life' was part of creation and was the 'light' of all mankind.

Becoming one with Jesus is to have life - a light or 'life force'.

Gospel of Thomas, Saying 77:
Jesus said, "I am the light that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all attained.
Split a piece of wood; I am there.
Lift up the stone, and you will find me there."
Jesus is in everything - split an atom and you will find Him there. There is a 'life' or 'light' that is over or in everything. If you become one with Jesus (John 6:53) you have this life (or more of it?) in you.

This all sounds very similar to Qi. In traditional Chinese culture, qi or ch'i is believed to be a vital force forming part of any living entity. Qi translates as "air" and figuratively as "material energy", "life force", or "energy flow".

Qi is in everything but qi can be cultivated and enhanced to improve health and promote healing. By enhancing the flow of qi - also sometimes described as a warm flow or energy (light?) - you promote healing, health and longevity - better in quality and quantity.

Qi is not something demonic - it is something that is part of the creation (as described in John 1:1) that another culture discovered (as they lived in a world created by God) - they just gave it a different name. See knowledge of God beyond the Bible.

Jesus also felt this healing power flow when he healed others

Mark 5:30

Immediately Jesus, recognizing in Himself that power had gone out from Him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched My clothes?
Becoming one with God means you have this healing power (life force) that flows inside of you - that can be moved and activated by faith.

Gospel of Mary Magdalene 4:28
Then He continued and said, That is why you become sick and die, for you are deprived of the one who can heal you.
Becoming one with God means better health and longevity - not that you will live forever or never get sick - your faith just helps you to be healthier and live longer - better in quality and quantity.

Becoming one with God is not just about health. The 'better in quality' also means overall growth and prosperity.

Jesus said that if we want our prayers to have any power, we need to believe that what we asked has already taken place (Mark 11:23).

How much more will we believe if you no longer believe that God is this far-off, angry God - but that He is your loving father (see the previous article in this series - becoming a child) and that God is inside of you, that God is one with you!!

John 15:5-8
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

It is not about having a shopping list. When you change who you are - what you think about yourself - if you believe God is within you, that Jesus is one with you - then your faith will be able to get things done - things that matter. You bear fruit and you glorify God.

Becoming one with God is about having life - a life that is better in quality and quantity - life in abundance.
